Have you ever had to deal with a not-so-nice person? Did you write them off as a zero thinking that you couldn’t do anything anyway or, did you turn your inside hero on to bring out the best in them?
I don’t know about you, but, I have had my share of bullies throughout life. I was reminded of one today. His name was Tony. I was in the 4th grade at the time and he was repeating the 4th grade. He was a bully! I didn’t know his whole story nor did I want to at the time. In the course of that year, I decided that Tony needed a friend and so did I.
Tony was big and strong! Me, I wasn’t! I just wanted to be his friend, not his punching bag. So, I set out on a mission to be kind in hopes that he would be kind back. It took a while and a pocket full of Jolly Ranchers every day, but finally Tony started showing signs of kindness back. By being kind to Tony I gained a friend and a little protection, too!
Rather than write him off as a zero, I turned on my inner hero and kindness won in the end. My kindness brought out Tony’s kindness and a friendship was born. If I can do it, you can, too! Be kind to others. One simple act of being kind again and again makes a big difference.
